And yes, digitization and automation in all aspects of our lives has probably been a determining factor in increased social apathy and an emerging loneliness epidemic, especially among the younger generations. But who is to say that AI cannot be part of a solution? It all boils down to what design principles we follow when we develop such models. A human-first approach can be key. AI companions equipped with patience, compassion, and knowledge, can guide us through life’s opportunities and challenges, combat sadness and the desperation associated with loneliness, and help us navigate through the process of (re)-connecting with others and with society more broadly.
